Custodian Part-Time

Position Summary
As part of the Housing team, the Custodian helps create a clean, safe, and supportive environment for tenants living in our housing. The Custodian works 20 hours per week to maintain the cleanliness of common areas and grounds, contributes to a positive tenant experience, and helps ensure our buildings reflect Thrive’s commitment to quality and care.
We are looking for someone who takes pride in their work, values equity and inclusion, and is comfortable working in a diverse community setting.


Key Responsibilities
Cleaning and Maintenance
  • Clean and disinfect common areas (lobbies, hallways, elevators, stairwells, laundry rooms, community rooms, and washrooms).
  • Perform routine floor care (sweep, mop, vacuum, strip, wax, and buff floors).
  • Empty waste and recycling bins; maintain waste collection areas.
  • Clean entryways, walkways, and outdoor grounds as needed
  • Restock supplies in common areas and janitorial closets.
 
Health, Safety, and Reporting
  • Conduct regular checks of the building and grounds to identify safety hazards, maintenance needs, or cleanliness concerns.
  • Promptly report maintenance or safety issues to the manager
  • Handle cleaning products safely and follow Thrive’s health and safety protocols.
  • Follow all organizational policies with an emphasis on equity, dignity, and tenant privacy.
Tenant Interaction & Community Care
  • Greet tenants respectfully and respond to questions in a helpful manner when appropriate.
  • Support a welcoming and inclusive environment for all tenants, including those with diverse identities and experiences.
  • Communicate tenant concerns to the appropriate Thrive staff member.
  • Work collaboratively with staff and respect the lived experiences of tenants.


Qualifications
  • Experience in custodial, janitorial, or cleaning work (residential or institutional settings preferred).
  • Understanding of safe cleaning practices and the use of cleaning equipment and chemicals.
  • Ability to perform physical tasks, including lifting up to 50 lbs, bending, standing for extended periods, and working indoors and outdoors.
  • Ability to manage time effectively and work independently.
  • Strong attention to detail, reliability, and care for the quality of the living environment.
  • Respectful communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Commitment to equity, inclusion, and respectful tenant interactions.
Assets
  • Experience working in social housing or supportive housing settings.
  • Familiarity with trauma-informed approaches and harm reduction principles.
  • WHMIS certification or willingness to obtain.
  • Basic knowledge of building systems (plumbing, HVAC, electrical) is an asset


Working Conditions
  • This is a part-time position, 20 hours per week. The schedule will be set in consultation with the manager.
  • Physical work is required, including lifting, bending, and working with cleaning equipment.
  • Work will take place in both indoor and outdoor settings and may involve exposure to weather conditions.

Compensation:
 
Annual $33,579 - $40,814
Hourly $17.22 - $20.93

  • Acceptable criminal reference check (Vulnerable Sector Check)
 
Vehicle:
 
  • Valid Driver’s License and access to a reliable vehicle.
